MAY IS NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
“It’s OK To Get Help”
In order to raise awareness and to build broad public recognition around the role of mental health to overall health and the factors that promote mental wellness, the Mental Health Association (MHA) in Indian River County, Inc. is observing National Mental Health Month in May with a series of activities. The public is invited, free of charge, to avail themselves of any or all of them.
On Wednesday, May 7, Anxiety and Depression Screenings will take place at the MHA offices. The public is invited to arrange for an appointment for a free 15 minute consultation with a licensed therapist between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Resources, information and brochures will be available.
As a joint venture between MHA and Hanley Hall, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Screenings will be held at the MHA offices on Thursday, May 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Appointments are necessary for a free 15 minute consultation with a professional. Resources, information and brochures will be available.
In recognition of “Older American’s Mental Health Week”, Dr. Beverly Whiteley will hold a “Senior Lunch n’ Learn” on Wednesday, May 21. Dr. Whiteley will speak to “The Art of Ageing”, a talk about how to develop resources to get the physical, emotional and spiritual stages of becoming an ageing person. Her exciting and informative presentation will include a free lunch. Space is limited and reservations are required by Monday, May 19.
To complete Mental Health Month, Dr. Joseph Cheries, Psy.D, Licensed Clinical Psychologist at the Behavioral Health Center, will present “Helping a Loved One Overcome Eating Disorders” on Thursday, May 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. His lecture, followed by a question and answer period, will include a free box light dinner/snack and beverages. It will be held at the United Way office on 1836 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach. Reservations are necessary by calling MHA 569-9788 no later than Monday, May 26.
The MHA, a United Way Agency, is the only nonprofit resource that people in Indian River County have for immediate access to crisis counseling and mental health solutions. MHA proves its value to the community everyday in the lives saved, the families helped and the connections made for people facing mental health challenges.
